Although most people tend to first notice his welcoming smile and engaging personality, Herbert A. Agnew II, also known as Herby, is recognized for his talent, ingenuity and integrity. Herby’s distinguished career spans from both government and nonprofit arenas and his expertise include marketing, relationship building, fundraising, social media management, just to name a few.
Herby was born in Rochester, New York to his loving parents, Herbert (Herb), Sr. and Perl S. Agnew. His father, Herb worked for Kodak but decided to join the military when Herby was just a toddler. This decision allowed for Herby and his older sibling, Tiffany to grow up in Hanau (Hessen), Germany. Resultantly, Herby attended German school from kindergarten to the 6th grade – making him both bilingual and bicultural.
After several intercontinental moves between Europe and the US, Herby landed in Georgia for his last year of high school and college. During his undergraduate experience at Georgia College & State University, he helped to bring about change to his campus community. Herby helped revitalize and restructure the prestigious Student Ambassador Team, a highly selective group of campus tour guides and student representatives, by introducing a new selection process. He also spearheaded a student chapter of Colors United, an organization aimed at enhancing diversity initiatives. And as a sophomore, Herby was elected Mr. Georgia College 2002-2003.
In 2007, Herby was one of the youngest professionals in the state and the first person of color to become Director of Alumni Relations at Georgia College. During his tenure, he helped to redefine alumni weekend by creating a homecoming tradition. His efforts increased overall alumni participation by 300%. Herby was also responsible for creating Georgia College’s first student giving campaign which surpassed its goal by 10% in its year of inception.
Before joining the university advancement team for his alma mater, Georgia College, Herby was the special projects manager for Milledgeville MainStreet/Downtown Development Authority. While at MainStreet, he strengthened relations between the agency, city officials and downtown merchants. Under his leadership, the organization was one of the first MainStreet organizations to pass a national accreditation without a permanent director.
Herby has a high degree of empathy with regard to others, in both personal and professional dealings. He loves helping others find their perspective diamond in the rough and being the catalyst for them to recognize and celebrate their unrealized potential. He has volunteered with several civic organizations and continues to offer his time and talent to initiatives that are in line with his passion.
When he’s not busy helping others, Herby enjoys participating and being a patron of the arts. As an accomplished vocalist and thespian in his own right, he frequents musical and theater performances when possible.
Herby graduated with honors from Georgia College & State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration in International Business (concentrations in Management and Marketing), with a minor in Rhetoric. He currently resides in Atlanta, GA.
